Choosing the right materials shapes how a home performs in Perth's climate — hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters — as well as how it looks and how long it lasts. Here are five materials worth discussing with your design team early in the process.
1. Recycled and reclaimed brick
Reclaimed brick reduces demand for new material and brings texture and character that's hard to replicate with new product. It also has good thermal mass, which helps even out indoor temperatures between Perth's warm days and cooler nights.
2. Sustainably sourced timber
Timber from certified, sustainably managed forests (look for FSC or PEFC certification) is a renewable structural and finishing option. Locally appropriate species can also handle WA's climate well when properly treated and detailed.
3. Rammed earth and hempcrete
Both are low-carbon alternatives to conventional masonry. Rammed earth offers excellent thermal mass and a distinctive, layered aesthetic; hempcrete is lightweight, breathable, and a strong insulator. Both require a builder experienced in these techniques to get right.
4. Low-VOC insulation and finishes
Insulation, paints and sealants with low volatile organic compound (VOC) content improve indoor air quality without compromising performance — a simple swap with a real day-to-day benefit for your household.
5. High-performance glazing
Double glazing or low-E glass reduces heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter, cutting reliance on air conditioning and heating. Paired with correctly sized eaves and north-facing living areas — the ideal orientation for passive solar design in Perth's southern-hemisphere climate — good glazing does a lot of the thermal-comfort work for free.

Material choices are easiest — and most cost-effective — to lock in during the design phase, before construction documentation is finalised.
